Alcohol and nutrition

Is there such a thing as the “least harmful” alcohol? 🍺🤔

If only there were a “healthy” alcohol… but the honest answer is: all alcohol is harmful—the difference is mostly how much and how often you drink. If you’re choosing the “less bad” option, here are the simple rules:

  • Lower amount + less often = less harm.
  • Dry wine or light beer can be easier to keep moderate than spirits (shots sneak up fast).
  • Skip sugary cocktails/liqueurs: lots of sugar → more calories and usually a rougher next day.
  • Don’t mix different drinks in one night—less chance of going off the rails.
  • Eat real food (especially protein) and drink water between drinks.

Calories note: alcohol still counts as calories (and it often comes with snack cravings 😅). If our app tracks calories/alcohol, use it like this:

1) Log the drink right away (before the glass magically refills itself).

2) Pick the correct volume and ABV when possible.

3) Add a personal rule: 1 drink = 1–2 glasses of water (set a reminder in the app).

Best for health: none. Best realistic approach: rarely, small amounts, no sugary mixes, and hydrate. 😉
